Massa Lombarda is a small town under the province of Ravenna, located on s.s. 253 (strada Statale S. Vitale) between Bologna and Ravenna.

At the end of the year 2001, the population amounted at 8445 units considering only italian people and 8536 units considering non-resident people too.

A project's overview

We would like to submit a new project of sanitary research for your attention as it is of deep scientific importance at both national and European level.

The key point is that the project links the demands of rapid social evolution and its relationship with territorial sanitary supply. In this context, in the area in which we have been working, the alliance of health policy and systematic research has been reached through a public- private partnership.This was formed by an academic spin off between the University of Bologna, experienced researchers, and the Italian Association most representative of the Industries. The company born of this integration of strengths is Health Ricerca e Sviluppo Srl., The initiative, within the advanced sanitary research, will improve the component of the development agenda which focuses on a network of national and European Institutions.

To this end, the projects have been given the provisional names of Instant Individual Definition Project and the Running Elderly Life Project. The first project is related to the prevention of cardiovascular illnesses, and the second relates to the self- rated health among older people.

In practice, the organisation has action objectives in preventive medicine, managed in centres of excellence in which advanced innovative research takes place through the use of permanent epidemiological observatories.

This territorial medicine and the international research associated with it has gained the involvement, support and assent of the population by utilizing mass- media networks and publicity, thereby creating a system which can truly be considered to be, in terms of communication, research, and support from industry, a population laboratory.

This mass media campaign used health creation as a slogan and so the population, as the central focus of the project, is an actor. The process of social fusion has been obtained by using new theories of analysis derived from fractal formulas opportunely modified. These strengths are currently being built within the national institutional corporate body responsible for health and the research, and is an integrated system working in five centers situated in small towns in Europe.

The protocols are designed so that they can be exported appropriateness will be valued not only through indicators of effectiveness, efficiency and feasibility in the sanitary field, but also through the quality of life perceived by the population, and through its impact not only on economic resources but also on the culture. The Massa Lombarda Project for Instant Individual Definition (IID) of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is the pilot study. In 2002 Massa Lombarda was the first small town in Italy in which screening of the population started, and by continuing into the following year for about 22,500 years/ man it will furnish important preliminary results. In epidemiological terms, the project will frame new factors of risk, genetic markers, and sensibility in respect of the new diagnostic methodology used. Upon consolidation of the pilot study, the same project will begin in the other national and European centers thereby markedly improving the scientific profile of the research. In addition, from a different point of view, creating a new culture in this system will improve health impact assessment not only in the town of Massa Lombarda, and the other towns in the project, but also in the largest cities throughout Europe at a later date.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS PROGRAM

Our heart is a pomp and the so call "coronaries" are the blood vessels that bring its "gasoline" for the operation and the nourishment. When these are crusted the blood passes badly and the heart works badly, it receives little oxygen; it is as to run with a scarf above the mouth. The heart in this condition shouts pain and the person warns it: a crisis of angina pectoris happens. If the vessels are closed entirely, blood doesn't pass and a piece of heart dies or rather the heart attack happens. A great heart attack stops the activity of the heart. In Italy and in Europe every six minutes a person suffers such event. This is the most diffused disease in the western world, it reaps more victims of the neoplasia. The encrustments of the coronary that bring to the heart attack are formed a lot of time before, really when the persons feels them in full health. To know if, as and from how much a person is unwell is of great importance.
It is necessary to study the normal people to understand the illness transmission pathway from parents to children, which environmental, genetic, socio-economics and life-style factors cause the disease and to dislodge the illness in the incubation period, when a person doesn't warn troubles. In other words we can know, prevent, take care of people and transmit to others our experience.
The citizens of Massa Lombarda age over 25 years will be guests to give this important contribution. The free choice and the "consent" it will be not only an answer but the awareness that it is possible create your health and collective health.
